How to transcribe a video to text

  1. Choose the file

Press Choose a file and pick a video or an audio file from your device, up to 500 MB.

  2. Let it upload and be read

The file uploads straight to storage, and its audio is run through speech recognition.

The transcript comes back punctuated, with a timecode on every line. Copy it, or download it as .txt, .srt, .vtt or .doc.

How a video becomes a transcript here

Every file is listened to, which is why the text has sentences in it

A file has no caption track to lift, so every one is listened to. The upload goes straight from your browser to storage, the sound is taken out of it, and speech recognition turns it into words — each one timed to the moment it was said. The transcript comes back with sentences in it: capitals, full stops, commas where the speaker paused.

The length is checked before anything is listened to. Up to twenty minutes is free, forty-five on Studio and sixty on Pro. A longer file, up to sixty minutes, is priced first — 1 credit per twenty minutes over your limit — and anything longer is refused in one sentence rather than part-way through; neither counts against your day.

The language is recognised from the audio, and the transcript is in that language. With a monthly or yearly plan, or for 1 credit each, it can then be translated by AI into one of 20 languages, or summarised into its main points. Clear speech matters more than which language it is; music, crosstalk and strong accents can cost accuracy, and names are where it slips.

§ 03

MP4 transcription, and the other files it reads

Video or audio, up to 500 MB

Video: an MP4 — what most phones, cameras and screen recorders save — or a MOV from an iPhone. Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, AAC and FLAC. The file has to be under 500 MB and has to have sound in it: a silent screen recording has nothing to transcribe, and you are told so.

A video and an audio file end in different places. From a video, you can mark any line of the transcript and export it as a vertical 9:16 clip with captions burned in — clips need a free account. An audio file has no picture to cut, so it lands on the transcript alone: copy it, correct it, download it.

Have a link rather than a file? There is no need to download anything first — paste it into the YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or Facebook transcript tool.

What people transcribe from a file

Subtitles for a video you made

Download the .srt or .vtt and bring it into your editor or your upload, with the timings already in place.

A recording you need in writing

An interview, a lecture, a voice memo: the text to search and quote, with the timecode of every line to find it again in the audio.

A document to edit

The .doc opens in Word with a timecode beside every line; the .txt is the plain words, ready for notes or a draft.

The clip worth posting

From a video, mark the lines that landed and export them as a vertical clip with the captions burned in.

Straight answers about video to transcript conversion

How do I convert a video to a transcript for free?

Press Choose a file above and pick the video. It uploads, its audio is transcribed, and the transcript opens on a page of its own with a timecode on every line. No account, no card, nothing to install.

Does it work on formats other than MP4?

Yes. Besides MP4 it reads MOV video and MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, AAC and FLAC audio, up to 500 MB a file.

Can I transcribe an audio file?

Yes — an audio file is read exactly like a video. The one difference comes after: with no picture there is no clip to cut, so you get the transcript to copy, correct and download.

Is it a video to text converter or a subtitle maker?

Both, from the same transcript. Copy transcript and the .txt give the plain text; .srt and .vtt are subtitle files with the timecodes in them; the .doc opens in Word.

How long can the file be?

Up to twenty minutes of audio free, forty-five on Studio and sixty on Pro, and up to 500 MB whatever its length. Past your limit, up to sixty minutes, listening is 1 credit per twenty minutes over, priced before anything is listened to; a file over sixty minutes is refused.

Is it really free?

Five transcripts a day per browser, no account and no card — the same five across every transcript tool on this site. A file that cannot be read does not count. Past five, each transcript is 1 credit, and so is each AI summary or translation — or a monthly or yearly plan makes transcripts unlimited (fair use: 50 a day) and includes the summary and translation.

What happens to my file?

It is kept only as long as the job: 72 hours after upload without an account, 30 days with one, then the file and its transcript are deleted. Its audio goes to a speech-recognition service to be transcribed, and we do not use your file or its transcript to train anything. Who handles what is listed in the privacy policy.

Which languages?

The tool does not restrict the language: it is recognised from the audio, and the transcript comes back in it. With a monthly or yearly plan, or for 1 credit, you can then have it translated by AI into one of 20 languages, and download the translation as .txt or .srt.

Can I cut a clip from my video?

Yes — mark the lines on the transcript and export them as a vertical 9:16 clip with captions burned in. Clips need a free account; the rate card has the rest.

Is there a transcript tool for a link?

Yes — for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, all listed on one page.
